Batshuayi out for rest of season, but World Cup hopes not over

Borussia Dortmund insist Michy Batshuayi could still make Belgium’s World Cup squad, despite the Chelsea loanee suffering an ankle injury that has likely ended his season.

The 24-year-old’s time in Germany appears to have come to a premature end after he was taken off the pitch on a stretcher in Dortmund’s derby defeat to Schalke on Sunday.

Batshuayi joined Dortmund at the end of January on an arrangement until the end of the season and the striker has scored nine times in 14 appearances.

While confirming Batshuayi is set to miss their final four Bundesliga games with the ankle problem, Dortmund also stressed he may be involved at the World Cup with Belgium.

Roberto Martinez’s side, who are in England’s group, begin their campaign in Russia on June 18 against Panama.

Dortmund said on Twitter: ““@mbatshuayi has suffered an ankle injury in the derby at @s04 and is likely to be out for the rest of the season. Playing for the Belgian national team at the World Cup in Russia is possible. Get well soon, Michy!”

Batshuayi did not address his World Cup prospects in his own social media posts.

He wrote: “Well its not good news for now, my season is probably over, and i wont be able to pay @BVB back for their confidence … Thank you all the amazing amount of love I received since yesterday. Wishing my teammates the best for the final days. See you soon .”

Batshuayi appeared in five of Belgium’s World Cup qualifiers, scoring once for Martinez’s men.

He joined Chelsea from Marseille in the summer of 2016 and it was Batshuayi who scored the goal at West Brom that sealed the Premier League title for Chelsea last May.

However, Batshuayi made just three starts in the Premier League this season before moving on to Dortmund when Antonio Conte’s side signed Olivier Giroud.
